WHAT IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN WHAT A PERSON CAN DONATE?
- Paint a picture first, using descriptions of organs, tissues, and corneas.
- Ensure the family is aware of the potential information they can receive regarding the gifts their loved one may be able to donate
What are the benefits of this method?
- It encourages families to think about the description at hand and consider if they know someone who has been through a similar scenario
- It may create a unique personal connection to the discussed gift
- If a family is on the fence regarding donation, this new explanation may be a contributing factor in obtaining authorization
Examples:
Your son can help:
- Two people breathe again through the gift of his lungs
- Take two people off of dialysis though the gift of his kidneys
- Restore the sight to two people through the gift of corneas
- Help burn victims though the gift of skin grafts

MAINTAIN YOUR FOCUS IN THE MADNESS
On a normal day how many directions are you going in and how many details are you expected to manage in any given situation? It is amazing that we hit the bulls-eye as often as we do given all that we have to tackle.
Contrast this normal day with a busy day, when you are faced with many more tasks and situations. Wouldn’t it be amazing to learn how to refocus your mind in a matter of minutes and restore calm?
Here is a drug-free way to stimulate the oxygen supply to your brain, a method that is used by the US Army to train sharpshooters and also in Special Ed classrooms when working with ADHD students. These methods are called Brain Switch-ons and they incorporate several acupuncture points.
Switching-on Exercises
1/. To correct side to side switching problems:
Hold the navel with one hand. Rub the end of the collar bones (K27s) with the other hand. Change hands and repeat.
2/. To correct top and bottom switching problems:
Hold the navel with one hand. Rub the upper lip and below the lower lip with the other hand. Change hands and repeat.
3/. To correct front and back switching problems:
Hold the navel with one hand. Rub the tailbone with the other hand. Change hands and repeat.

ACKNOWLEDGING THE HARD ‘NO’ WHILE BUILDING TRUST AND RAPPORT
When a family says ‘No’, it is important that they know they have been heard and understood. Without formally acknowledging the ‘No’, using their exact words, they can perceive the approach as pushy or disrespectful.
How specifically do you both acknowledge and open the door to donation?
- Model and utilize the language used in the ‘No’
- Take special care to acknowledge them by letting them know you ‘hear’, rather than ‘understand’ their concern. Telling them you understand is often perceived as insincere
- Utilize phrases that encourage them to share their story, rather than asking if they will tell you their concerns
EXAMPLE:
Family Words:
“We just don’t do this type of thing as a family.”
Acknowledgement Utilizing Phrase and Hearing their ‘NO’:
“I hear that you just don’t do this type of thing as a family…”
Inviting them to Share their Concerns…full answer:
“I hear that you don’t do this type of things as a family…please share your concerns.”
Note: You are not asking if they will share their concerns, you are inviting them to share. Because they feel heard and acknowledged they will often share the reasons the family does not do this type of thing. This opens the door to understanding the possible misunderstandings around donation.

HANDLING OBJECTIONS: GETTING TO THE MISUNDERSTANDINGS THAT PREVENT DONATION
It is a known fact that most Objections have misunderstandings about donation.
Examples:
- My family member’s body will be treated in a disrespectful manner
- We will not be able to have an open casket
- Because my son was a drug addict…his body is useless
Misunderstandings, usually based on myths and fears about organ donation, will fuel the desire to say ‘no.’
Given that Objections are often based on fears / incorrect understanding it is essential to understand the ‘story’ about the Objection. Success in getting past the ‘no’ depends on:
Your ability to…
- Realize that you do not know their story and most stories have misunderstandings
- Understand that Mind-Reading the Objection often destroys the rapport necessary to get to the underlying problem
- Be prepared to ask Deeper Questions. The real objection is in the story.

LEARNING STYLES & HOW PEOPLE MAKE A DECISION TO DONATE
Learning Styles are integral in how people make important decisions. There are three principle Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (feeling-based learner).
It is essential to not ‘push the river,’ particularly with Auditory and Kinesthetic learners; a fast approach is experienced as out of Integrity.
Auditories are 19% of the population and must ‘hear the right answers’ and therefore require more time to approach. They need:
- Rounds of questions
- Facts and citings
- In-depth details
Think in terms of 4 rounds of questions. They want to know things that the other strategies simply don’t care about. They are seeking expertise to make a decision.
Kinesthetics (feelers) comprise 35% of the population and must ‘feel’ right about the decision.
- Need to experience or feel into the entire donation experience
- Encourage them to get up and move, go get a cup of coffee; They think more congruently when moving
Think approximately three rounds of feeling into the decision. Encourage them to take their time to feel into the decision
Visuals are 45% of the population and must ‘see’ the right information
- Because they remember and understand through pictures they want to ‘see’ the information. They like charts, pictures, brief videos, etc.
- Visuals process very quickly and make decisions quickly based on what they see. Arrive prepared, knowing they will give you very little time

Making the Human Connection in a Donation Conversation
Why is this important?
We have seen time after time that ‘real life’ examples not only humanize the conversation, but also gets the family to really think about donation. Do we know someone who is on dialysis or has trouble breathing? Do we know someone who has trouble with their eyesight? Do we know someone who has been through the long emotional and painful journey of breast cancer?
Making the human connection in your donation conversation can allow for a personal connection to be made. It can also create a sense of trust and make room for engaging conversation.
How can we make the Human Connection in our donation conversation?
One example is when explaining or talking about what gifts someone can help people with. A person can use the description first of organs, corneas, and tissues to really soften and make the conversation gentler, kinder, and more appealing. Instead of listing the organs, corneas, and tissues you can humanize like the following examples below.
EXAMPLES:
Your Donation Can…
- help get two people off dialysis through the gifts of his/her kidneys
- help two people breath again through the gift of his/her lungs
- help restore the sight to two people through the gift of his/her corneas
- help women who had breast cancer and suffered through breast mastectomies through the gift of skin grafts
Bring the gift of hope one step closer by forging the human connection in the donation conversation. It is a bridge that is both effective and heart-warming.

SELF-CARE – TAKING CARE OF THE UNSUNG HEROINES/HEROES WHO APPROACH FAMILIES
How many days have you found it difficult to relax, sleep, and foster regular self-care habits? The profession teaches us to take care of others, but devotes little time to self-care.
The Upside of working in the OPO world is that you make an enormous difference to the family’s quality of life after the untimely death of a loved one. You personally help a family feel that their loved one’s life will truly become a legacy of hope and healing.
The Downside of this powerful work is that you regularly work tough hours and are on critical many days, with little down-time to eat or care for yourself. You are invariably exposed to trauma as a part of your daily experience.
Here is something simple you can do that costs nothing and is highly effective in relieving stress.
Emotional Stress Relief Points:
There are two neurovascular points above the eyebrows, eyeballs. When coupled with deep breathing, these allow for the restoration of blood in the frontal lobe. When stressed / overwhelmed the blood flows down the spine to the legs to run away (fight & flight response).
Touch the two points gently (see picture above), close your eyes and deep breathe for several minutes while thinking of what is stressing you. Do this for three rounds and notice what happens to your ability to step back from what is stressing you.

CRITICAL MUST-MENTIONS – A KEY IN GETTING A YES TO DONATION
There is no script when talking to a family going through one of the worst hours of their life.
I remember vividly being in a room of transplant coordinators and asking if they initiated certain ‘Must-Mentions’. For example: “Who talks to a family about donation not impacting funeral arrangements / having an open casket?” No hands went up. This reinforces that seasoned coordinators and new staff may know the information . . . but may not be discussing this with families. Certain Must-Mentions MUST be addressed in every conversation with families.
Must-Mentions are not new to the field. It is critical / key to donation to prioritize them by discussing them every time.
Takeaways:
- Be certain that Must Mentions are relayed as Crucial Information each time to Maximize Effectiveness in Donation
- Understand that Must Mentions provide maximal coverage for yourself
Is Your Team Ready?
How many more effective and sensitive conversations will your organization need to have to achieve Tier 1 status? What can be done to ensure that potential donor families are receiving all the important information in order to make an informed decision?
Ready to focus your team on Critical Must Mentions?

Neurological Truths About Eye Contact – It Does Not Mean What Your Mama Taught You
Many of us have been taught elaborate social myths about eye contact…for example:
They aren’t paying attention . . . if they are not making eye contact
They are not understanding . . . if they are not making eye contact
They are not telling the truth . . . if they are not making eye contact
The eyes are the externalization of the brain. Two of the three learning styles will not be making eye contact while processing information…
No eye contact = accessing and integrating information
Find this fascinating? Join us for the revealing course Maximum Connection / Minimal Time — Subconscious Rapport & Learning Styles.
